In this verse Paul tells us to study and then tells us exactly how.
No one really argues that we are to study the Bible. Most people agree on many of the study methods used today. Most people however have no idea of the study method we are instructed to use by our Apostle Paul. Paul instructs us to "rightly divide." To rightly divide scripture is to cut it straight. Unfortunately, modern Christianity has no idea how to do this because we trust pastors, commentaries and scholars in place of Gods word. We can see the harmony and perfection God placed into every page if we would trust God and his directions. God inspired his word and preserved his word, and our job is to believe his word. Paul tells us he is our pattern and example throughout scripture. Modern Christianity chooses to trust scholarship and denominational proof texting rather than the clarity of scripture when it is rightly divided.

Why do we follow Paul's example? To follow Jesus today we must follow our apostle Paul. Because Jesus sent Paul to us.
Brethern, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample Philippians 3:17
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting I Timothy 1:16
We follow Paul's example because we are clearly instructed to follow it in scripture.
